OLA Continues Big Sister, Little Sister Tradition

Recently, the seniors adopted the freshmen class in the annual Big Sister, Little Sister ceremony. Congratulations to the class of 2025 and the class of 2028 on their new school sisters!

The Big Sister, Little Sister Ceremony is a long lasting tradition at Our Lady Academy. Beginning in 1976, the senior class adopts the freshmen class as their little sisters. On September 13th, the tradition continued with a ceremony and prayer service that took place at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church.

Days before the prayer service, the seniors, maintaining their anonymity, left a handmade costume in their little sister’s lockers for them to wear on the following day for the BIG reveal. The next morning in the gym, the seniors wrapped themselves in wrapping paper and attached a gift tag, identifying their little sister’s name. The freshmen anxiously searched for their name and unwrapped their big sister to reveal their identity. The senior was dressed in a matching costume that the pair wore for the rest of the school day.

The ceremonial act of “passing the torch”, which occurs when the big sister lights the little sister’s candle, was observed during the ceremony and prayer service. The torch represents the beginning of a special bond of sisterhood between the seniors and freshmen. The seniors will take on the responsibility of helping their adopted little sisters navigate their paths to a successful first year of high school.

Senior class president, Margaret Compretta, addressed their newly adopted freshmen class and encouraged the little sisters to cherish their time at OLA and the time they have together.

Congratulations seniors and freshmen! We hope this new sisterhood will last a lifetime.
